Program:

The Measure of our Society: Book Clubs for Inmates is a registered charity that organizes volunteer-led book clubs within federal penitentiaries across Canada. At the moment, Book Clubs for Inmates is facilitating 36 book clubs from Nova Scotia to British Columbia. They run French and English language book clubs for men and women incarcerated in minimum, medium, and maximum security facilities.

Tom Best, Executive Director of Book Clubs for Inmates, joins me to curl up over a great story: it’s a story about a book club.

Johnny Cash (Live at Folsom Prison), who played dozens of prisons throughout his career, first became interested in Folsom Prison after watching the film Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison with his Air Force unit in 1953.

B.B. King (Live in Cook County Jail) was at a career crossroads of sorts when he recorded this classic record in the Cook County jail, backed by a crack band and horn section.

Jerry Garcia and John Kahn (Live at Oregon State Pen) Jerry Garcia and John Kahn played an acoustic show at the Oregon State Pen in 1982. An afternoon of transcendence in the most unlikely of places.

Black Uhuru (Live at Soledad Prison) Reggae legends Black Uhuru played Soledad Prison in California in the midst of a partial lockdown, but the tense atmosphere lifted when the music started.

The Sex Pistols (Live at Chelmsford Top Security Prison) The Sex Pistols’ 1977 concert in Chelmsford Top Security Prison.
