I follow an American organization called Smart Growth America, whose goal is “improving lives by improving communities”. I get their regular newsletters because i want to understand how infrastructure affects traffic, and what changes we as a community can implement to make our roads safer. One of their recent annual reports was entitled Dangerous By Design. Here is a clip from the introduction to that report: 

“2018 was the deadliest on record for people walking and riding bicycles in nearly three decades. In 2018, drivers in the United States struck and killed 6,283 people walking, and another 857 people were struck and killed while riding bicycles."
