Preliminary data from the Smithers RCMP has shown a slight decline in property crime and shoplifting in Smithers just this past year. Several prolific offenders have been taken off the streets, which according to local RCMP, was the biggest contributor to the decline in statistics.
When comparing only shoplifting calls over the past four years, this year (Jan–Sept 2025) accounts for 12%, down from 45% in 2024.
When comparing only offences against property over the past four years, this year (Jan-Sept 2025) accounts for 17%, down from 28% in 2024.
