Program:

In the wake of intense flaring from the LNG Canada facility in Kitimat, residents have approached the District of Kitimat council about writing a letter of support calling on the Government of B.C. to conduct an independent cumulative health assessment of LNG development in B.C. and the potential impact to Kitimat residents.

Although several other municipal councils including Terrace, Hazelton and Squamish have already sent letters, Kitimat council voted down a motion to send their own letter, citing a high level of regulation that already oversees LNG production in B.C.

However, many residents in Kitimat and across B.C. are still working to initiate the cumulative health assessment.

Following a presentation at the Mount Elizabeth Theatre in Kitimat, about why an assessment is warranted, I spoke with Gerry Libble, a Kitimat City councillor about what he’s hearing from the community and why he and other council members are supportive of the community lead effort to initiate a cumulative health assessment in Kitimat.
