Hudson Bay Mountain just hosted the 40th annual Schussboomer, one the longest running recreational downhill ski races in Canada. More than 160 participants from across the northwest and beyond took to Twinkletoes on Hudson Bay Mountain’s north slope in the hopes of being crowned the fastest person on the hill.

But after 40 years, it’s not only about the need for speed but the spirit of community and a tradition that is more vibrant than ever. In the end, Chris Campbell from Quesnel hit 100.59 km/h next to Bridie Hikisch from Smithers’ 107.15 km/h. Phil Bernier had the fastest time with 1:26.99 in the men’s competition and Bridie Hikisch also took the female competition with 1:30.46.

The oldest competitor this year was 85-years-young Heikki Juustila, from Kitimat via Finland. Heliki fell in love with skiing Hudson Bay Mountain half a century ago and he’s been in a few Schussboomers over the years. For his final run in the Schussboomer Heikki Juustila claimed the Grand Master division with 2:08.71.
