Maureen Nyce is the Chief Councillor for the Haisla Nation. For more than ten years they have invested heavily into Liquefied Natural Gas, in support of LNG Canada’s export facility in Kitimat. They spearheaded the charge to ship Canadian LNG overseas and essentially helped to build the industry in Canada. Now they are currently constructing their own LNG facility, Cedar LNG, which will be ready in the next couple of years.

However, last fall when the Federal and Alberta governments signed an MOU to create the conditions that would see a new west coast oil port, the Haisla were not impressed. They pushed back and will continue to push back on what they see as a risk they cannot take, oil.

Today we speak with Chief Councillor Maureen Nyce about why the Haisla are investing in LNG and at the same time vowing to stop oil transportation through their waters.
