On Saturday night a wildfire was reported only 55 km from Prince Rupert along Highway 16. Videos of Social Media show a fire close to the rail-line and spreading up a steep ridge next to the tracks. By Sunday evening the BC Wildfire Service was dispatching crew to attack the fire and as of Aug. 17th the fire is now considered under control. This comes after another wildfire was started along Highway 16 near Cedarvale, allegedly sparked by an RV that had caught fire while driving and pulled over. That fire required dozens of personnel and single lane traffic for several days before the fire was considered under control. As the conditions remain dry and hot for the final leg of summer, we checked in with the Northwest Fire Centre to ind out how crews are preparing for what could still be a hot summer and fall.
