When the Fish Stocks are Low, part two, with Natasha Akiwenkie.
Last week, Natasha and I talked about the family business, Akiwenzie’s Fish, which they had to set aside a few years ago when climate change—and an increase in the number of windy weather days—was endangering anyone on a boat in Georgian Bay. That decision let the family to launch the Bagida’waad Alliance. The Bagida’waad Alliance is an indigenous, grassroots organization whose territory’s shoreline encompasses 800 KM of the Bruce Peninsula. Anyone can see why theirs was a fishing tradition.
This week, Natash Akiwenzie returns to share Bagida’waad’s mission—to speak on behalf of the whitefish—and how the Saugeen are accomplishing that.
