Art Beat is back on the air this week and making up for last week's absence with three exclusive interviews about Line in the Sand a feature length documentary film on the Northern Gateway Pipeline Project.

I'll interview filmmakers Tomas Borsa and Jean-Philippe Marquis by telephone from the end of the line in Haida Gwaii, PLUS live in studio with me will be Smither's resident Len Vanderstar who appears in the film.

I caught Line in The Sand's Hazelton premiere this past Monday (April 6th). The film made a strong impression on me.  It is comprehensive in content, includes a diversity of voices, and is more informative then it is preachy.

Filmmakers Tomas Borsa and Jean-Philippe Marquis have done an exceptional job of lighting, editing, composition, and put together an emotive soundtrack for the film. The result is a pleasure to watch. Line in the Sand manages to offer a solid balance of factual information and personal perspectives. This is a film for the informed, the uninformed, the dedicated environmentalist, the simply curious, and everyone in-between.

Though the topic of the film is serious and contentious the content is lightened by funny and camp archival footage, family pets and the joie de vivre of the filmmaker's own road trip project. The film's soundtrack could stand alone as an energetic and compelling offering of talented independent British Columbia musicians.

Line in the Sand is a film about a prescient topic - pipelines. While the film focuses on Northern BC it is a topic to an increasingly conscious global population. Oil and gas are present everywhere in the world and pipeline projects abound.

Look out for gasp-worthy footage about the Kalamazoo River oil spill, and a special appearance by Severn Cullis-Suzuki.  Line In The Sand is a must see film for all British Columbia residents, and it will be of particular interest to those living in Northern BC who will recognize many of the communities, people, and places included.

Catch the film's premiere in Smithers on April 18th - 7pm at the Old Church. In Vancouver April 22, 7pm at VIVO Media Arts Centre. Check out the film's facebook page for more screenings.

Line In The Sand is also a website project that includes a further compilation of personal stories and photos from those living on the pathway of the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.
